Tsukiji Shishi Festival 2015: A Traditional Mikoshi Festival Overflowing with Kindness

The traditional Tsukiji Shishi Festival is held every year on 6/10-14 at the Namiyoke Inari Shrine in Tsukiji. Scores of mikoshi (portable shrines) are paraded together with enthusiastic yelling. 2015 is the year of the main festival so on the 13th will be togyo-sai, or the festival celebrating the transfer of a sacred object. There will be a mikoshi there visible only once every three years.

The Tsukiji Fish Market will be moving to Toyosu next year so this year will be the last that the mikoshi will be paraded through the market. For that reason, everyone is likely to be there.

Update: It’s been made official. The outer market will remain in Tsukiji.

Naturally, the flashy mikoshi are great but I’ve come to love that through festivals local regions are revitalized and people are brought together. Information: Map
