Both New & Old “Top 3” Spots for Nightscapes with Huge Panoramic Views

Today we have useful information to share on sightseeing at night in Japan. In Japan, there are three spots known since long ago for their great nightscapes, and there are also 3 new nightscape spots that have recently been recognized. This means we have a total of 6 places for you today.

Old Top 3 Spots for Nightscapes

We deliberately attached “old” to these to make differentiating them easier, but they’re still some of the most popular nightscapes in Japan. All of these can be seen by taking a ropeway from the ground to the top of a mountain and looking down at the views below.

1. Mt. Hakodate – Hakodate, Hokkaido

You can enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the city of Hakodate from 334m high up on Mt. Hakodate. The curved silhouette created between the Hakodate Bay and the Tsugaru Strait is very unique and completes the individuality of the geography. This nightscape isn’t just famous in Japan but worldwide.

2. Mt. Maya – Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture

At a height of 702m, Mt. Maya provides a view of Kobe all the way to Osaka. You have the economic leaders of western Japan spread out before you. The views are staggering and perfect for a romantic night. This night view makes it difficult to believe that Osaka is a hectic place of business during the day.

3. Mt. Inasa – Nagasaki, Nagasaki Prefecture

You can see all of Nagasaki from the top of Mt. Inasa, 333m up. There’s something breathtaking to this nightscape, which includes Nagasaki Bay, and the reflections on the water’s surface are wonderfully beautiful. Further down we’ll share another Nagasaki nightscape you must check out—it’s gotten a lot of attention in recent years.

New Top 3 Spots for Nightscapes

The above “Old Top 3 Spots for Nightscapes” uses data that’s several decades old and “New Top 3 Spots for Nightscapes” were recently picked. These were selected by 4,500 qualified judges knowledgeable in nightscapes known as the Yakei Kanshoshi (Nightscape Appreciation Specialists). There are also places that are on the old Top 3 Spots for Nightscapes but it’s probably safe to say that the information that comes from their reevaluation is trustworthy.

1. Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture

Mt. Maya in Kobe has been nominated once again. Another name for the Kobe nightscape is the $10 million view for it’s like shining jewels have been scattered all over. Other famous and recommended places outside Mt. Maya include the lit-up Kobe Port Tower and Kobe Ohashi Bridge.

2. Sapporo, Hokkaido

From Hokkaido again! This time it’s not Hakodate but rather Sapporo that’s newly joined the list. The recommended spot is Mt. Moiwa, where you can see the Sapporo metropolis. The 360-degree night views are the best part.

3. Nagasaki, Nagasaki Prefecture

And the one getting the most attention right now is Nagasaki with Mt. Inasa. Everyone agrees Nagasaki is the leading spot in Japan for night views having been on the listings for the Old Top 3 Spots for Nightscapes, the New Top 3 Spots for Nightscapes, and the New Global Top 3 Spots for Nightscapes (Hong Kong, Monaco and Nagasaki). Aside from Mt. Inasa, Mt. Nabekanmuri and the Glover Garden are also popular and the perfect places to visit with your significant other.

After you’ve explored Japan’s famous sights, up your experience with a romantic night view and enjoy with some sake.
