Love Live! μ’s: Invited on Kōhaku Uta Gassen for the First Time!
It has been officially announced that μ’s, the school idol group in the animated series Love Live!, will be competing in the 66th annual NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen, airing on 12/31. μ’s is a popular female singing group composed of the nine voice actors in the anime series. It is extremely rare to have voice actors or anime singers on the show, but I believe this demonstrates how big μ’s presence is in the Japanese music scene right now. Photo
What is Kōhaku Uta Gassen?
It is a singing competition show that has been running since 1951, courtesy of the Japanese State Broadcaster, NHK. Teams are separated by gender into red and white, and it is one of the longest running shows in Japan. The literal meaning of “Kōhaku Uta Gassen” is “red and white singing contest.” Since it runs live every New Year’s Eve it has become a tradition for many families, and therefore to many Japanese people this show officially signifies the end of the year. To be invited on Kōhaku Uta Gassen, where so many big enka (one of the traditional Japanese singing genres) stars attend, is extremely difficult and a huge honor in itself. I suspect that all of the younger singers in Japan aspire to be a part of this New Year’s Eve ritual at least once.
The show for this year, 2015, will air live on 12/31 from 7:15 – 11:45. Make sure to check out the amazing μ’s! Information
