Selfie Stick Ban at All West Japan Railway (JR) Stations + Other Restricted Areas

West Japan JR has released an official restriction on the 17th to ban the usage of selfie sticks at almost 2000 stations, including bullet trains, starting from the 19th. The reason for this is its risk in electric shock, and to prevent inconveniences caused toward other train users or physical contact with trains. This is the first time where all relative stations have implemented official restrictions in Japan. Needless to say, Hokuriku bullet train route’s main stations, such as, Kanazawa Station, Fukuyama Station, etc., are also restricted.

West Japan JR has not only promoted the precautions to the fact that even if the selfie stick itself does not directly contact the cable wires, just becoming close can lead to electric shock, it has also put up posters in its stations to advise this knowledge.

According to this release, we have compiled a list of tourist spots in Japan that now have restrictions regarding the usage of selfie sticks.

As we can predict, from now on, places, such as the temples or shrines, with implementations of selfie stick usage restrictions will continue to increase. However, regardless of which place, all managements only have one thing in mind, which is to allow visitors to create the best memories on their trips. Due to the quick popularity increase of the selfie stick, the current situation is that users’ etiquette have not been normalized; therefore, making the restriction stricter in only a short period of time might not improve the situation. Once everyone understands the etiquette in regards to selfie stick usage, the restrictions can be loosened as time goes on.

This time, we have compiled the tourist spots with selfie stick usage restrictions. However, rather than only understanding where it can be used, it is more important to be able to make judgments with one’s common sense and know whether it may cause others’ inconveniences or whether it is correct to use it at crowded places.
